Discovering the Sahara Desert Ecosystem
Despite extreme temperatures and minimal rainfall, the desert ecosystem in Morocco is extraordinarily diverse. The Sahara is made up of more than just sand — it also includes rocky plateaus (hamadas), salt flats (sebkhas), mountainous outcrops, and ergs (dunes). These varied landscapes create habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna.
Plants such as tamarisks, acacias, and desert grasses survive by storing water or growing deep roots. Small pockets of vegetation often signal the presence of underground water sources, which form the basis of oases. These lush green areas serve as critical lifelines not only for wildlife but also for local communities. Many towns and regions have developed around these oases, such as Tafilalt, which is centered on Morocco’s largest oasis.

Meet the Sahara Wildlife
Though much of the Sahara’s wildlife is nocturnal and elusive, with a bit of patience — or the help of a knowledgeable local guide — you can catch glimpses of some truly fascinating creatures, from shy mammals to well-camouflaged reptiles.
Dromedaries
Of course, the most iconic animals of the Sahara are the dromedaries. While these desert camels are domesticated, they are an essential part of the desert landscape, perfectly suited to life in the arid ecosystem. With their single hump and long legs, dromedaries can travel vast distances across the sands without needing water for days.
They have long been an essential part of desert culture and remain a vital companion for local nomads. Today, you can travel by camel yourself to experience the landscape like a Berber. It’s also an excellent way of spotting other wildlife! Read our blog about 5 Bucket List Experiences You Can Only Have in the Sahara Desert for inspiration!

Fennec Foxes
The fennec fox is one of the Sahara’s most beloved creatures. While it’s the world’s smallest fox species, it’s notable for its oversized ears, which help them regulate temperature and detect prey while hunting. Fennec foxes are nocturnal, but may be spotted darting through the dunes in the early morning or evening hours, or sleeping in their burrows during the day.

Jerboas
Like miniature kangaroos, jerboas are desert-adapted rodents known for their incredible jumping ability. Their long hind legs help them quickly escape predators, and they can survive without drinking water, instead obtaining moisture from plants. Jerboas can be spotted in the dunes of Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi, so make sure to keep an eye out for them on a desert nature walk, one of our popular experiences offered at our camps!
Desert Hedgehogs
While they may seem small and cute, desert hedgehogs are resilient inhabitants of the Sahara.
These small, prickly mammals are nocturnal hunters that thrive in Morocco’s desert terrain, and can even feed on scorpions without getting stung.
Barbary Ground Squirrels
Although we may often associate squirrels with city parks, the Barbary ground squirrel is native to northwest Africa. They may typically be seen in the rocky outcrops of the Atlas Mountains, feeding on seeds, roots, and fruits. Social animals, you may spot them burrowing with their colony in the heat of the day.

Sand Cats
One of the most elusive animals of the desert, the sand cat is a small, stealthy feline superbly camouflaged against the dunes. Known as the king of the desert, they can survive without water and even kill venomous snakes. Spotting a sand cat is rare, but always a thrill.

Saharan Reptiles
The Sahara is home to an array of reptiles that thrive in the sunbaked environment. Make sure to watch out for sand vipers, venomous snakes that slither beneath the sands. Another reptile that navigates beneath the dunes is a sandfish, a common skink that swims in sand!
Birdlife in the Sahara
Surprisingly, birdwatching in the Sahara can be incredibly rewarding. You might see sandgrouse walking across the sands, desert sparrows flitting between palm trees, or falcons and eagles soaring above the dunes. And every year, European songbirds fly over the Sahara as they migrate south for the winter.
